Christopher Columbus was not born
rich instead he was the son of a wool merchant. He was able to get a job in a
merchant ship, which was attacked leading to the sinking of the boat. Columbus
survived and floated back home where he decided study mathematics, astronomy,
cartography and navigation. He wanted to go in his first voyage because he
wanted riches and fame. In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed in the
Atlantic Ocean, where he stumbled upon the Americas. He wanted to find a faster
route to Asia instead of going around Africa. In the same year, he landed in
the Bahamas. Because of the trips he took to the Americas he was able to pave the
way for European Exploration. This led to many Europeans and other people going
to the Americas to try to explore what they called the “New World.” No,
Christopher Columbus did not “discover” the Americas because there is evidence
that people years before him, had traveled there. Also there were many people
already living there at the time. But as said before because of his travels he
was able to pave the way for exploration and exploitation. People celebrate
Columbus Day because they are celebrating Columbus’s voyage during the colonial
period. Others celebrate it because of his landing to the “New World”. And others celebrate it because of their
heritage. They are also many others that celebrate it for different reasons,
but there are some that want the holiday to be taken out.
Reflection: My thoughts and feeling about this is that I don't celebrate any holidays so holidays like this one are not really important to me.
