History of Basketball
James Naismith, a physical education
instructor, was the inventor of the game we call basketball. He invented this
game while working at YMCA Training School in Springfield. He invented this
game/sport in 1891. He invented it by using his imagination and wanting to have
a game where there was “skill, finesse, and accuracy. “ In http://wonderopolis.org/ it states that he
created this game because he was challenged to make a new game” that could be
played indoors in the cold Massachusetts winter to provide an ‘”athletic
distraction”’ to a disruptive group of students. In the beginning they were probably
playing inside one of the building or outside in a small field. They would play
with soccer balls because obviously basketball weren’t made until later. Also
iron hoops weren’t made until later so they would use peach baskets to throw the
ball in and later retrieve it. There were 9 players on each team and 13 rules. Basketball
today is different from basketball when it started because now there are more rules
that need to be followed so players don’t get hurt. Also we have a court personally
made for basketball and also a ball and iron hoop with a net.
